How to Survive a Kitchen Remodel
Handled properly, a kitchen remodel can be a rewarding, deeply satisfying experience. As a homeowner, it’s a chance to achieve the design and appliance selection you’ve spent years contemplating in the layout that’s perfect for you.
But a poorly planned approach can lead to frustration, cost overruns, unnecessary stress, and rushed decisions you’ll regret.
The keys to survival:
Plan ahead! Do the planning, make products selections and design decisions BEFORE work begins. It sounds obvious, but too many people jump in before they’ve fully thought through the project.
Shop AroundTake the time you need to shop around for all the elements that go into a kitchen remodel, from countertop materials and flooring, to backsplashes, appliances and lighting. There are no standard appliances anymore. KAM recommends you fully understand appliances options that are available.

Look through design magazines and websites. Start a Pinterest idea board. Above all, don’t be pressured to rush decisions you’ll regret later. Ask questions and take your time.
Rank your priorities. If you’re married, you and your spouse might not always agree. Consider making two ranked list of the elements that are important to each of you. Compare lists and respect your spouse’s priorities.
Review the budget. Take the time to go over the quotes from contractors and don’t be afraid to make adjustments – eliminating items that bust the budget – so you’re comfortable with how much you’re spending. Make sure your partner agrees.
Create a temporary kitchen. If living in the house during construction, be realistic about how long it will take. Set up a temporary kitchen, pantry, and breakfast table. You’ll need a fridge, microwave, electric kettle, and workspace. Make sure there’s a place to wash and dry dishes. If it’s summer, make use of the grill! (Maybe now’s a good time to buy a new one.)
Communicate with your contractor. Be up front expressing your concerns and preferences, and make sure your contractor protects the rest of the house from dust and debris, keeps a tidy workplace, and removes demolition debris promptly.
Enjoy the process! The kitchen is the most important room in the house. Remodeling it can be a creative and very satisfying experience – a personal expression of you and your family. Take the time to do it right and you might just enjoy the process!
